The Boal fish (Wallago attu) is a large, predatory freshwater catfish native to South and Southeast Asia. Due to its aggressive nature and sharp teeth, it is often nicknamed the "freshwater shark"
Physical Characteristics Appearance:
It has an elongated, laterally compressed body with a broad, flat head.
- Mouth & Teeth: The mouth is exceptionally wide (gaping beyond the eyes) and filled with multiple rows of small, sharp, conical teeth used to grip prey.
- Barbels: It features two pairs of barbels; the maxillary pair is very long, extending past the start of the anal fin.
- Size: While it can grow up to 1.1 meters (approx. 3.6 feet), some historical reports suggest larger sizes, though these are often confused with its larger relative, Wallagonia leerii.

Scales: It is a smooth-skinned fish and lacks scales entirely.
Habitat and Behavior Locations: Native to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, inhabiting large rivers, lakes, and deep pools.
- Diet: An apex predator and cannibalistic scavenger, it primarily feeds on smaller fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Activity: Generally stays in deep, slow-moving water or hides in holes during the day, becoming more active at night.
Culinary Profile Texture & Taste: The flesh is white, firm, and succulent with a mild, sweet flavor similar to cod. It is an oily fish, providing a rich, "buttery" taste when cooked.
- Cooking: Popular in Bengali and Assamese cuisine, it is frequently used in spicy curries (jhol or kalia) or deep-fried.
- Bone Structure: It has a central skeleton but is largely free of the small "Y" bones found in carps, making it easier to eat.
