The Story of Sunderban: Our Founders Story

The dream of starting my own business began early. I arrived in the Netherlands in 1992 and worked for various companies for ten years. But the entrepreneurial spirit was calling, and I looked for a way to make a real difference for the community.

The Missing Piece in The Hague

Around the turn of the century, there was a major gap for the Bengali diaspora:

• There were no Bengali grocery stores in The Hague.
• People had to drive for hours to Amsterdam or Brussels for their specific groceries.

I realized this was the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap and serve our community.

A Lifeline for Authentic Products

From 2010 onwards, the community changed rapidly as highly skilled migrants from West Bengal, India, started moving to the Netherlands. For them, Sunderban quickly became the essential lifeline. We ensured they could feel at home with the flavors they missed most:

• Authentic Hilsa and Rohu fish.
• Fragrant Gobindobhog rice.
• All specific Bengali spices and goods.

Stepping into the Digital Future

In 2018, I looked ahead and realized that online shopping would be the future. The biggest challenge? Arranging nationwide delivery for fresh and frozen goods. By the end of 2018, we cracked the code and found the perfect logistics solution.

Launched to Serve

In March 2019, we officially launched www.sunderban.nl. This timing turned out to be a blessing in disguise:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our webshop was a lifeline for many. Customers across the Netherlands and Belgium could safely buy their familiar groceries through us.

What started as a dream in The Hague has now become the leading online destination for Bengali cuisine in the Benelux. We continue to bring you a taste of home with love and passion!
