Product Description
Haldiram’s Chekaralu (often spelled Checkaralu or Chekaralu) is a popular South Indian snack that is effectively the Andhra-style version of the spiral-shaped Murukku. While the Northern variants of Haldiram's snacks lean heavily on chickpea flour (Besan), Chekaralu stays true to its southern roots by focusing on a Rice and Moong Dal base.
The "Buttery Spiral" Profile
Chekaralu is known for being lighter and more "melt-in-the-mouth" than the spiky, harder Chakli found in Maharashtra. It has a smooth, pale golden surface and a distinct aroma of roasted lentils and toasted sesame seeds.
Product Highlights
-
The Flour Blend: It primarily uses Rice Flour and Moong Dal Flour (Yellow Lentil). The inclusion of Moong Dal gives it a softer, more brittle crunch compared to the Urad Dal used in traditional Murukku.
-
The "Jeera-Til" Aroma: It is heavily seasoned with Cumin (Jeera) and Sesame Seeds (Til). These are not just for flavor; they are visible throughout the spirals, providing nutty bursts with every bite.
-
Texture: It is characterized as "buttery" and crisp. It shatters easily and dissolves quickly on the tongue, making it a favorite for children and the elderly.
-
South Indian Heritage: While Haldiram's is a global brand, this specific product is a tribute to the Jantikalu or Chekaralu traditionally made in Telugu households during festivals like Sankranti and Diwali.

Chekaralu vs. Moorukulu: The Subtle Difference
Haldiram's sells both, and while they look nearly identical, the difference lies in the "Dal" used:
-
Moorukulu: Typically uses Urad Dal (Black Gram). It is slightly harder and has a more "roasted" lentil taste.
-
Chekaralu: Primarily uses Moong Dal (Green/Yellow Gram). It is generally lighter, "whiter" in appearance, and has a more delicate, crumbly texture.
Serving Suggestions
-
The South Indian Combo: Serve it alongside Curd Rice or Tamarind Rice. The crunch of the Chekaralu provides a perfect textural contrast to the soft rice.
-
The Filter Coffee Ritual: Much like the Moorukulu, its best companion is a hot, frothy cup of South Indian Filter Coffee.
-
The "Quick Canapé": Because of its flat, spiral shape, some creative hosts use it as a base for a tiny dollop of mango pickle or a piece of cheese for an instant fusion appetizer.
Storage Note
Because Chekaralu is made with rice and moong dal, it is highly sensitive to moisture. Once the pack is opened, it must be moved to an airtight container immediately; otherwise, it loses its signature "melt-in-mouth" snap and becomes chewy within hours in humid climates.
Pro Tip: If you're looking for a snack that is easier on the teeth than the hard Chakli or Gathiya, Chekaralu is your best bet. It’s the "gentle" giant of the crunchy snack world.
