Product Description

Haldiram’s Murukku is a tribute to the "Southern Delights" of India. While many of Haldiram’s famous snacks (like Bhujia) are rooted in North Indian traditions, the Murukku is an authentic South Indian staple—a crunchy, spiral-shaped savory snack made from rice and lentils.

The word "Murukku" literally means "twisted" in Tamil, referring to its iconic coiled appearance.

The "Rice & Lentil" Profile

Unlike the chickpea-heavy (besan) snacks of the North, the Murukku relies on Rice Flour and Urad Dal (Black Gram) Flour. This combination creates a "harder," more substantial snap and a unique toasted-grain flavor that is distinctly different from a typical mixture.

Product Highlights

  • The Signature "Snap": It has a dense, sturdy crunch. Because it is made with rice flour, it doesn't dissolve instantly like sev; it requires a satisfying bite that releases its flavors.

  • Aromatic Seasoning: It is subtly flavored with Cumin (Jeera), Sesame Seeds, and sometimes a hint of Ajwain (Carom seeds). These whole spices get toasted during the frying process, providing bursts of earthy aroma.

  • Intricate Spiral Shape: Each piece is extruded through a mold into a coil, which creates multiple "crunch points." The uneven, ridged surface is perfect for holding onto its light dusting of salt and mild chili.

  • "Chakli" vs. "Murukku": While similar to the Western Indian Chakli, Haldiram’s Murukku stays closer to the South Indian style—using more rice flour for a whiter, lighter appearance and a focus on the flavor of the lentils rather than heavy spice.

Best Ways to Serve

  • The "Filter Coffee" Companion: In South India, Murukku and a frothy cup of Filter Coffee are an inseparable pair. The bitterness of the coffee perfectly balances the salty, fried notes of the snack.

  • Festive Platter: It is a mandatory addition to snack platters during festivals like Diwali or Krishna Janmashtami.

  • Dips & Chutneys: Because of its sturdy structure, Murukku is one of the few Indian snacks that can be used as a "chip." It pairs excellently with Spicy Tomato Chutney or a cool Coconut Dip.

Pro Tip: If you're hosting a party, don't break them! Serve the spirals whole for a more premium, traditional look. However, if they do break, the pieces are great for adding a "South Indian crunch" to a bowl of plain curd rice.
